I missed my STEM OPT 6-month validation report

Short answer: contact your DSO today — this is usually repairable, and the repair gets harder the longer you wait. The 6-month validation is the lowest-stakes report in the STEM OPT reporting stack when it's on time, and the one that quietly accumulates risk when it isn't.

What the validation actually is

Every six months from your STEM OPT start date, you confirm that your SEVIS record is accurate — name, address, employer, employment status. It's a validation, not an essay: if nothing changed, you're confirming exactly that. The report is due at the 6-, 12-, and 18-month marks, and you have 10 business days from each due date to make it. 8 CFR 214.2(f)(12)(ii)(B)

Missed the window — what happens now

Email your DSO immediately. A DSO can enter the validation into SEVIS after the deadline and note the circumstances. The regulation puts the reporting duty on you, but the record repair runs through the school.
Check the SEVP Portal. If your account still works, confirm what the portal actually shows — students regularly believe they missed a report that the portal recorded, and vice versa.
Don't stack failures. One late validation with a prompt fix is a footnote. A missed validation plus an unreported employer change plus a stale address starts to read, in SEVIS, like a student who isn't maintaining status.

The distinction that matters: the validation report belongs to you; the SEVIS record belongs to the school. Your DSO can fix a late report. Your DSO cannot un-terminate a record that SEVP closed after months of silence — that road runs through reinstatement or a data-fix request, both slow and neither guaranteed.

Don't confuse it with the other STEM reports

12-month self-evaluation — part of the I-983, signed by your supervisor, submitted to your DSO (not the portal).
Final evaluation — same form, due when the training ends or you change employers.
Material changes — new employer, new supervisor, changed duties or hours: a revised I-983 to your DSO within 10 business days.

The portal validation confirms the record. The I-983 evaluations document the training. Missing one doesn't satisfy or excuse the other.

Is my SEVIS record automatically terminated if I miss a validation report?

Not instantly and not automatically in most cases — but a record that goes unvalidated is a compliance flag, and unresolved reporting failures can lead to termination for failure to maintain status. Treat it as urgent, not fatal.

Do I report through the SEVP Portal or myUSCIS?

The SEVP Portal (or directly through your DSO). USCIS and myUSCIS have nothing to do with the 6-month validation — that confusion is one of the most common reasons reports get missed.

What if my SEVP Portal account is locked or the email link expired?

Your DSO can reset portal access from SEVIS, and can also enter the validation on your behalf. A dead portal login is never a reason to let the deadline pass silently — email your DSO the same day.
